“Do not Undervalue Your Birthright” Genesis 25:19-34
Atsushi Tsuneki
1. A Repeating Cycle
What trial did Rebekah obviously have
in common with Sarah?
What did Isaac do for his barren wife,
that God answered? (v. 21)
When Isaac married, he was 40
years old (v. 20). He finally got a child when he was 60 years old (v.
26).
He waited for 20 years!
Examples the main character is born
from a barren woman
They were given a child by God’s
miraculous involvement, grace.
2. Couldn’t Wait
The babies jolted each other within
her, what question prompted Rebekah to inquire of the Lord? (v. 22)
When did you last wonder something
similar?
What explanation did God give for
Rebekah’s difficult pregnancy? (v. 23)
How were the two named?
What kind of men did they become?
Who only heard the prophecy of God
about the twins? (v.22-23)
We don’t have to steal, cheat, and lie
to get what God promised us!
The mistake Sarai made. Gen. 16:1-
3.
Do not
Undervalue Your Birthright
Birthright
Romans 8:17, Eph. 1:14, Col. 3:23-24
Esau Heb. 12:16
Although he responded sensitively to what
he wanted in front of him, Esau placed no value on spiritual blessings.
Don’t trade your eternal life in Christ
for the lust of this world!

“Generational
Impact” Genesis 26:1-14
1.
Find an Iniquity
What similarities do you see between Abraham’s and Isaac’s
actions in Genesis 26; glance at Genesis 12:10-20 & Genesis 20:1-11.
Iniquity -- Generational effects of sin. Tendency to commit sin due to
parents’ sin. Parents’ action pattern.
2 “ visiting the iniquity of the parentsupon the childrenand the children’s
children,to the third and the fourth generation.” (Exodus 34:7 NRSV)
■
Everything we
do in our house has an impact until the generation of our grandchildren!
Actions we inherit:
2 Short-temper,
2 Anger
2 Physical
abuse
2 Verbal
abuse
2 Sexual
abuse
2 Sexual
addictions
2 Negative
thinking
2 Materialism
2 Racism
Unless we
recognize that behavior as an “Idol,” face it, and fight it, we repeat
the same pattern.
When we are tested by a difficult situation, how we saw our
parents respond (whether poor or well) in a similar situation is ordinarily
first among our multiple-choice answers.
2.
Internal Vow
= the vow that occurs by being hurt by
parents or someone else. Try to do the opposite of what we have experienced.
Emotional
wound
Lie
(Example)
My father chose my brother.
What I do is not important.
Life driven by anger and resentment
Life driven by fear
Materialism
Life driven by the need for acceptance
Legalism
Life that is not filled
Unnecessary stress
Matthew 5:33-37
When we make
these kinds of extreme internal vows, they could become “gods” in our life and create the situation into which the
true God cannot enter.
3.
How to Fight with the Iniquity
from the Past
1.
Admit or be aware of the problem.
Ezekiel
18:14-17
2.
Take responsibility for your own sin / Repent
Ezekiel
18:30-32
3.
Forgive your parents.
Luke
6:36-37
4.
Bring your iniquity to Christ and pray for resolving. From
Iniquity to Blessings.
“The
Lord,
the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love
and faithfulness,7 keeping steadfast love
for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,yet by no means clearing
the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the parentsupon the childrenand
the children’s children,to the third and the fourth generation.” (Exodus
34:6-7 NRSV)
Genesis
26:18, 24
2 Be
deliberate about not inheriting any of our parents’ destructive habits or ways
of thinking.
2 Unstop
any well of blessing from which we were meant to draw and drink.
Matthew 16:24-26
